Rangers player ratings as Leon Balogun's searing pace saves the day against Celtic

Rangers took an almighty step towards their first league title since 2011 as they weathered a Celtic storm at Ibrox.

Neil Lennon's team dominated for the first hour with Allan McGregor the busiest player on the pitch for long spells.

For all the visitors looked in control, however, the game turned on the hour mark when Nir Bitton saw red for bringing down Alfredo Morelos.

That gave Rangers a much needed shot on the arm and they took the lead less than ten minutes later. Joe Aribo celebrated it but it was a Callum McGregor own goal that consigned the defending champions to their second league defeat of the season.

Steven Gerrard 's team move 19 points clear at the top, and here is their player ratings after a fateful day in the south of Glasgow.

Allan McGregor

When Rangers need him he produces the goods and was at his stunning best to deny Celtic. Produced a trio of saves to thwart Celtic's strikeforce in the first half with his stop from Griffiths right out of the top drawer - 9

James Tavernier

Had to defend more than he normally does up against Laxalt or when Edouard drifted into his area. Couldn't impact the game with his surging runs forward but still came up with assist from the corner which led to McGregor's OG - 7

Connor Goldson

Seemed to be the only Rangers player barking orders during a poor first half as he and the rest of the defence were under serious pressure. Didn't produce any of his trademark raking passes but won headers and blocks to earn victory - 7

Leon Balogun

Given the nod ahead of Helander in Gers' backline because of his pace and used it to good effect several times. Tough shift against Edouard and Griffiths but made one terrific block on the French striker in the box that prevented a goal - 7

Borna Barisic

Usually a key man for Rangers with his deliveries into the box but rarely got that far up the pitch to hurt Celtic. Had one chance with a free-kick that was deflected just wide but spent most of the day chasing Frimpong back the way - 6

Steven Davis

Came into his own in the latter part of the game when Rangers had an extra man and had to hold on to the ball. But part of a midfield who were over-run early on and couldn't keep possession. Picked up a booking but used his experience late on - 6

Glen Kamara

Like every Rangers player in the first half he looked too passive and was second to most balls in the middle of the park. The Finn at least kept the ball a bit better than most of his team-mates but still a below par performance. Improved v 10 men - 6

Joe Aribo

(PA)

Got the slightest of touches on Tavernier's corner that was crucial in Rangers' winning goal. He deflected it on to McGregor who scored an OG and celebrated his side's winner. Wasn't the creative force he'd have liked to be before that as Gers toiled - 6

Kemar Roofe

Been a key man for Rangers of late but just couldn't get into the game in a poor first half for Gerrard's side. Worked hard by tracking back but nothing came off for him and was hooked at the break with Hagi replacing him on the right of the attack - 5

Alfredo Morelos

Should have been carded early on for challenge on Frimpong then picked up a booking for scuffle in second half. Failed to hold the ball up well enough for Rangers and gifted Celtic possession too often. 14 Old Firm games now without a goal - 5

Ryan Kent

Did a defensive shift when he had to on Rangers' left tracking Frimpong but didn't have the attacking impact he'd have liked as he struggled to get into the game. To his credit, always willing to take the ball and give team an outlet but eventually hooked 6

Ianis Hagi

On at half-time for Roofe and immediately fired off a shot that flew just wide. Kept the ball for his side better than they had in first half as well as doing a shift as they ground out win - 6

Cedric Itten

Thrown on for Morelos who couldn't be trusted by Gerrard to last the 90 without being sent off. Tried to hold it up when he could and gave Rangers an out ball - 3

Bongani Zungu

On for Kent late on to give Gers more solidity in the middle of the park as they held on for the win. Sat beside Davis in front of Davis, kept the ball and added energy - 3

Brandon Barker

Replaced Aribo at the death as Rangers looked to kill time and hold on to their lead - 3
