Rangers player ratings as Joe Aribo struggles under the derby spotlight

Rangers dropped their first points of the season on a disappointing derby afternoon as Celtic outfoxed them at Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard shuffled his pack and his approach but was edged out by counterpart Neil Lennon in a fascinating battle.

Alfredo Morelos was dropped in favour of Jermain Defoe, as was Sheyi Ojo in favour of deploying a compact midfield featuring Steven Davis, Ryan Jack and Joe Aribo, supported by Scott Arfield.

But it backfired as goals from Odsonne Edouard and Jonny Hayes inflicted a deserved defeat on Rangers.

Here's how Record Sport's Gavin Berry rated the Ibrox outfit man-by-man.

Allan McGregor

Wasn’t left with much chance as Odsonne Edouard coolly slotted past him for Celtic’s opener and he came to his side’s rescue with a brilliant double save from Hatem Abd Elhamed and Christopher Jullien in quick succession. Saved Jonny Hayes first attempt before Irishman netted rebound. 7

James Tavernier

With no real width in the side the onus was on the full back to get up the pitch but nowhere near as effective as he can be and he cut a frustrated figure. Skipper did have one shot late on but it was always rising. 6

Nikola Katic

Croatian stopper headed wide from a corner in a rare first half chance for the Light Blues and he was solid enough defensively apart from slack play with a couple of minutes left which led to a cahnce and it just wasn’t to be the home side’s day. 6

Connor Goldson

Former Brighton defender was at fault for Celtic’s opener after gifting possession to the visitors who made him pay having previously made an excellent challenge on Odsonne Edouard as the Frenchman was preparing to get a shot away from just outside the box. 5

Jon Flanagan

Picked ahead of Borna Barisic in left back role and involved in clash of heads with Hatem Abd Elhamed but the former Liverpool defender recovered from that and did well defensively with few problems down his side. 7

Ryan Jack

Midfielder could have been given his marching orders with studs showing as he thundered into a challenge with Boli Bolingoli but Bobby Madden didn’t even take his name. 6

Glen Kamara

Late challenge on Ryan Christie led to foul in a dangerous area for Hoops but wasn’t punished as free kick went wide. Finnish international was then sacrificed at the break as Steven Gerrard changed it. 5

Steven Davis

A key figure with his experience in frantic fixture and lovely play set up Jermain Defoe but offside flag was up. Rangers were second best in the midfield area in the first half but he always looked to make things happen. 6

Scott Arfield

On the end of a crunching Callum McGregor tackle and not as influential as he has often been for the Light Blues with a header that bounced just wide of the post his only real effort at goal. Booked. 6

Joe Aribo

Former Charlton Athletic man played in more advanced role but didn’t look comfortable and Gers needed more from him on a day where he didn’t seem to handle the big occasion. Subbed. 5

Jermain Defoe

Preferred to Alfredo Morelos in biggest surprise of home side’s starting line-up and had early chance but Hatem Abd Elhamed and Nir Bitton stopped him getting shots away in either half. Former England striker was then subbed on the hour with fans chanting for Alfredo Morelos. 5

Substitutes

Sheyi Ojo

Introduced at the break with Rangers needing a change and he tested Fraser Forster with home side’s first shot on target. 4

Alfredo Morelos

Given the shout on the hour and immediately got in behind Celtic defence only to shoot wide. 3

Jordan Jones

Was final throw of the dice for Steven Gerrard but sent off at the death for scything down Moritz Bauer. 1
