Rangers player ratings as Allan McGregor sends big occasion reminder

Rangers shrugged off a leggy start to brush aside Dutch opponents Willem II 4-0.

After a nervy opening 20 minutes, James Tavernier 's first-half spot-kick was followed up by Ryan Kent's clinical finish three minutes later.

Centre-back pair Filip Helander and Connor Goldson put the game well out of sight with two towering headers in the second half.

The away performance has Steven Gerrard 's side on course to make the Europa League group stage for a third season running but their final obstacle comes in the form of a home tie against Galatasaray next month.

But for now, the Rangers fans locked out of Tilburg will be delighted with their side's performance - here's how Record Sport rated the Light Blues.

Allan McGregor - 8

The veteran shot-stopper replaced Jon McLaughlin for the European big stage and pulled off some vital saves.

James Tavernier - 7

Skipper led by example to fire the opener from the penalty spot.

Connor Goldson - 7

Towered above everyone to head home the final goal. Ropey for the first 20 minutes but brushed it off to put in a solid performance.

Filip Helander - 7

Swedish centre-back was assured and his looping header clinched the tie. Like Goldson, endured a tough start but improved as the game progressed.

Borna Barisic - 7

Not at his scintillating best but still a respectable display from the left-back.

Glen Kamara - 7

Gave the ball away on occasion but a solid performance from the midfield man.

Steven Davis - 8

The Northern Ireland skipper also plays a leading role in the engine room when selected for his club side and was no different against the Dutch side.

Scott Arfield - 7

The midfield man always carries a goal threat and he linked up well with Kent on the left.

Ianis Hagi - 6

Could have contributed more. An average performance from the Romanian.

Ryan Kent - 9

A mesmerising showing. Won the opening spot-kick, showed his predatory instinct to claim the second goal and delivered an inch-perfect cross for the third. The main man.

Alfredo Morelos - 7

No goals for the Colombian but was still effective in his hold-up play. Snapshot was spilled by the Willem II keeper for the second.

Substitutes

Jordan Jones - 3

Climbed off the bench with a point to prove and looked lively.

Calvin Bassey - 3

Got his first taste of European football with the game won.

Cedric Itten - 2

Replaced Morelos for the final 10.

Man of the Match

Ryan Kent continued his flying start to the season as he won the penalty for the opener and then netted his fifth of the campaign with a close range finish before setting up Filip Helander for the third.

Steven Gerrard’s priority is to ensure he is still at Ibrox when the transfer window closes.
