Rangers plans for Ibrox party revealed as Scottish Government 'rejected' trophy celebration for 10,000 fans

The Scottish Government rejected Rangers' bid to allow 10,000 fans into Ibrox for their trophy presentation on Saturday.

Steven Gerrard 's side won the league for the first time in a decade and got their hands on the trophy for the first time after their win over Aberdeen.

It marked the end of ten years of Celtic dominance and celebrations spilled out across Glasgow - with some turning to violence late on Saturday night.

It has now been revealed that last month, chief executive Stewart Robertson had written to the government asking for permission to allow 10,000 season ticket holders into the stadium to celebrate with the players.

It had been hoped that this would prevent fans from gathering outside to celebrate the title win, since the club would have been able to send a clear message that only those with access to the stadium should turn up to Ibrox on trophy day.

The club cited the planned easing of Covid restrictions on Monday May 17, and had asked for an exception to be made to allow fans to return to Ibrox on Saturday 15th.

But it has now been revealed by the PA that the government rejected those plans.

Six days after Robertson's email on 21 April, a Government official responded saying they "cannot jeopardise" progress in the fight against Covid by allowing mass gatherings to take place earlier than planned.

Fans are not expected to return to Ibrox until the first day of the 2021/22 season in August,
