Rangers offered Celtic Covid hope as some stars could end isolation before Old Firm clash

Gary McAllister has offered hope that some Rangers players could be released from self isolation in time to face Celtic.

The Gers are currently in Armenia ahead of tomorrow night’s Europa League play-off round second leg against Alashkert.

Manager Steven Gerrard isn’t there, neither are Allan McGregor, Jon McLaughlin, James Tavernier or Ryan Kent.

A positive Covid test was returned and close contacts identified, meaning a number of the club’s squad and non-playing staff have had to isolate as per Scottish Government regulations.

That’s meant enforced changes for the game in Yerevan, but once that's out the way, all eyes will be on Sunday’s first Old Firm clash of the Premiership season.

The Hoops are also in European action tomorrow but haven't faced anything like the same issues their rivals have had in the build up.

Ange Postecoglou takes his team to Ibrox for the first time at the weekend in good form and chances are he could be facing a weaker Rangers team than would normally be the case.

But McAllister has hinted that some of the Light Blues’ stars that are isolating could be available for the derby clash.

It all depends on who tested positive when and how long it took to identify close contacts.

But the assistant manager was keen to stress that plenty at the club have now had both their Covid vaccinations and all options will be explored ahead of the big one in four days' time.

He said: “You’ve got to be mindful of the fact we have moved on, a lot of the people at our club have been double-vaccinated. There are advantages and we will be looking at that.”
