Rangers No.2 Neil Banfield coy over Celtic ticket refusal

Neil Banfield insists the Rangers and Celtic ticket allocation debate is way above his pay grade.

Yesterday it was confirmed that the Hoops had refused Rangers' offer of 708 tickets for the upcoming Old Firm game at Ibrox.

Celtic previously highlighted safety and access concerns for their travelling fans at Ibrox. However, it's understood that Gers chiefs were entirely satisfied that the additional security measures proposed to be implemented would ensure no issue would occur.

As a result, Rangers are fully expectant of Celtic to offer the same amount of tickets to their supporters for the second installment of the derby in December. This comes despite Celtic's rejection of Rangers' offering for the game at Ibrox. It comes under the SPFL's Rule I27.

The situation is far from resolved and is expected to carry on for some time. But Banfield will not be getting involved.

Filling in for Michael Beale's media duties ahead of tomorrow's League Cup tie against Morton, the former Arsenal coach insists he will back the club in whatever they decide to do.

"It’s the powers above me who make those decisions," he said. "I’m with the manager and what they decide we’ll do.

It’s always nice to have opposition fans but like I said, we’ll just leave it to the board and Michael and we’ll respect whatever they decide to do."
