Rangers' next manager favourite to replace Steven Gerrard is former Hamilton Accies boss

Former Hamilton Accies boss Alex Neil is the current bookies favourite to be the next Rangers manager as current Ibrox gaffer Steven Gerrard looks set to seal a move to Aston Villa.

It is being reported a deal to prise Gerrard away from Rangers is set to be completed within the next 24-48 hours.

And that has sparked fierce debate over who will take the reins in Govan if the move to the English Premier League goes through.

Bookmaker Betfair have Neil - who was previously in charge of Norwich City and left his post as Preston North End manager in March by mutual consent - as the frontrunner to become the next permanent manager of the Light Blues.

His odds have come in from 16/1 to 5/2, making him the favourite ahead of current Gers assistant Gary McAllister (3/1) and Derek McInnes (9/2), who turned down the job before Gerrard was appointed three years ago.

Former Rangers star and ex-Feyenoord boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who appears to be a popular option among fans on social media, is 15/2, with fellow ex-Ibrox stars Barry Ferguson (33/1), Frank de Boer (22/1) and Ronald de Boer (25/1) also making the list.

Neil, 40, spent 10 years at Accies, becoming player manager in 2013 and leading them to promotion to the Scottish Premiership during his first season in charge.

In his first and only season in the top flight, his Accies side beat Celtic at Parkhead for the first time in 76 years and his exploits caught the attention of Norwich in January 2015 when he made his move down south.
