Rangers manager Steven Gerrard backs initiative to help children in poverty

Steven Gerard has become the latest addition to a long line of legendary football icons backing an initiative to help kids in poverty.

The Rangers manager is supporting Football for Change which brings sports stars and business leaders together to provide young people with support in accessing education or employment opportunities.

It provides particular assistance to youngsters who come from challenged communities and may face barriers to unlocking their full potential, including the coronavirus.

Gerard said: "The COVID-19 pandemic has made the lives of so many young people who were already struggling even worse.

“The Football for Change initiative will give them opportunities in education and training so they can build towards a better life - people often don’t see how difficult that can be.

“I am proud to support it."

Other football backers include fellow Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher as well as Manchester United's Gary Neville, Neville Southall and Gary Lineker.

Football for Change will be hosting a gala dinner in November to distribute grants focussing on education, employment and training to organisations supporting youngsters in deprived areas.

All the football stars and business leaders involved in the initiative will be attending, including those who have overcome adversity and act as role models for social mobility to young people.
