Rangers 'looking to the future' as pundit explains how Charlie McCann transfer shows long-term plan

Rangers signed Manchester United teenager Charlie McCann last week, and although it may be a while before the midfielder sees any first-team football at Ibrox, he's in the right place to continue his development.

That's the view of former Rangers defender Alan Hutton, anyway, who feels the club are moving in the right direction by signing for the future.

McCann, 19, joins from United and will initially go into the Rangers B squad in the Lowland League.

The Ireland youth cap comes very highly rated and will spend the season playing alongside the best and brightest of Steven Gerrard's academy.

But Hutton, speaking to Football Insider, reckons he's heading right to the very top.

And the ex Tottenham and Aston Villa man feels his signing shows real long-term ambition from the Ibrox side.

"He’s had a good grounding and development with Coventry and then going to Manchester United.

“I think he’ll go into the youth set up for now, but he’s a really promising talent for the future - one Steven Gerrard’s identified to be able to progress into the Rangers first team.

“It’s always good to see how they’re not looking to just buy success instantly. They’re looking to the future and looking to bring people in to develop and make better to then introduce them to the first team.

“It just shows you the type of talent they’re able to pick up, like a promising young star from Manchester United.”
