Rangers line-up vs Falkirk revealed as Steven Gerrard hands chance to Cedric Itten in much-changed team

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has named his team to face Falkirk in the Betfred Cup second round.

It's the first cup game of the campaign for the Gers and they take on League One opposition.

That has allowed Gerrard to make some changes to his team and give a rest to some of his top players.

Gary McAllister had hinted at in his pre-match press conference by saying:  "We are really looking forward to the cup tie, it is a big match for us. We have a big squad and we will field a strong side.

"After the effort against Benfica we would always need to refresh the team for the weekend. The game Sunday is a perfect opportunity for some of the boys to put in a strong performance and for them to show the manager they are ready.

"Coming in and showing tactical awareness and in our shape is important for the boys on Sunday. We know the players at the weekend will come in and show the intent that they are ready to play.

"Everyone is working really hard here to support each other and work for each other. It is a very positive feel around the full building."

And he has done that by leaving Allan McGregor, Steven Davis, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos out of his starting line-up.

James Tavernier might have been rested too, if not for the fact Nathan Patterson is in self-isolation following the Covid-19 outbreak in the Scotland U21 squad.

It means chances have been handed to the likes of Jon McLaughlin, Calvin Bassey, Bongani Zungu and Cedric Itten to stake claims for regular starting points.

Full team: McLaughlin, Tavernier, Goldson, Bassey, Barisic, Arfield, Zungu, Hagi, Itten, Defoe, Barker

Subs: Firth, Balogun, Kamara, Stewart, Middleton, Dickson, King, Kent, Morelos
