He carries a famous family name - but Tom Hateley says he was keen to prove himself as a Motherwell player rather than live up to his father's great heights at Rangers.
The midfielder, who now plays in Poland with Piast Glwice, arrived at the Steelmen in 2009 and enjoyed a successful four-year stint at Fir Park.
His grandfather, Tony Hateley, played for clubs such as Chelsea and Liverpool while dad Mark joined Rangers in 1995.
He won six league titles with Rangers, so when Hateley came north fresh out the Reading academy, the obvious comparison was there. But he would not be defined by it.
Speaking on the sixth episode of the Lanarkshire Live Sport Podcast , Hateley said: "It was the same for the four years I was there. But I understand it.
"I was a Hateley playing in Scotland where he obviously did so well with Rangers.
"It's just part and parcel of being from this family, so that's what the questions were about. I've always said I'm lucky I'm not a striker, because then there would be a lot of comparisons.
"There would be more questions. We are different players and we had different strengths. It's never annoying and it's something I have embraced.
"I tried to make it about Tom Hateley rather than Mark Hateley. It's the way it is. The majority of people support Celtic or Rangers. We are a fortunate family.
"I am more than happy to represent the family name after the careers my dad and grandad had."
