Rangers legend Paul Gascoigne sent former manager 'wild with rage' as Italian icon reflects on 'biggest regret'

Italy legend Dino Zoff admits the biggest regret of his career is watching as Paul Gascoigne "threw away his art".

The Rangers legend spent three seasons in Serie A with Lazio and played under Zoff.

While Gazza went on to achieve success at Ibrox after leaving Italy, the World Cup-winning goalkeeper admits he couldn't bear to watch the Englishman throw away his talent.

Zoff told Rai Radio 2: "I was desperate, he was a great artist who threw away his art.

"I've always admired artists. They create, whereas goalkeepers create nothing.

"He sent me wild with rage but I felt sorry for him, he threw away his art in a big way. My heart cried for him.

"It was clear at the time that he'd have problems when he finished playing.

"There was one year he turned up to pre-season training 12 kilos overweight. He came in with a ponytail and an extra 12 kilos.

"When I saw him arrive at the training ground, I asked who that character was. It was Gascoigne.

"It’s the biggest regret of my career."

Though he managed just 43 Serie A appearances, Gazza is fondly remembered by Lazio fans - not least for scoring a late winner against Roma in the derby.

He joined Rangers in July 1995 for a club record £4.3million and went on to win two SPL titles.
