Rangers legend Paul Gascoigne's unwashed shorts and socks from Euro 96 up for auction

Unwashed shorts, socks and boots worn by Paul Gascoigne at the Euro Football Championship in 1996 are set to go under the hammer next month.

On June 18 1996, the football legend helped England beat the Netherlands 4-1 at Wembley, with the team going on to reach the semi-finals.

At the time, Gazza was signed to Rangers and had just helped send the Ibrox men to their eighth consecutive Scottish championship.

He spent three years at Rangers during the nine in a row era, winning two league titles, a Scottish Cup and a League Cup.

Now the shorts and socks worn by Gazza during the Netherlands match are to be auctioned.

They will be sold together with two of his spare Adidas Predator football boots with embroidered “Gazza” tongue, with a combined estimate of £800-£1,200.

At the time Gazza’s social life included his celebrity friends broadcaster Danny Baker and DJ Chris Evans.

The items were initially bought at a charity auction and are being sold with a hand-written note from Danny Baker authenticating the boots, shorts and socks.

The note states: I confirm that these shorts, socks and spare boots were give [sic] to me by Paul Gascoigne directly after England's 4-1 victory over Holland at Euro 96. Socks and shorts as worn, unwashed!”

The reverse of the note shows a photograph of Paul Gascoigne, Danny Baker and Chris Evans.

The sale is being held by Catherine Southon auctioneers of Bromley in Kent on June 9.

Sothon's Simon Spier said: "We are thrilled to be offering a pair of shorts, socks and boots belonging to Paul Gascoigne and worn during England’s historic win over the Netherlands during Euro ’96.

"These items - some still in match-worn state - offer the chance to own a unique piece of footballing history, belonging to one of the sport’s largest personalities."
