Rangers legend Paul Gascoigne in Irvine: A look back at star's controversial Magnum show five years on

He was the last bona fide superstar to grace the iconic Magnum Centre in Irvine.

But Paul Gascoigne's appearance at the former harbourside venue – five years ago this weekend – is sadly best remembered for all the wrong reasons.

The former Rangers and England ace was the hottest ticket in town as he brought his speaking tour to Ayrshire for one night only.

Billed as his Scottish homecoming, more than 1,000 fans packed out the Magnum Hall, all desperate to see and hear from a man famed for his colourful antics on and off the pitch.

Gazza was in fine form – looking healthy after well-documented troubles – and regaled the sold-out room with one hilarious story after another from his illustrious career.

He had the crowd eating out the palm of his hand but, unfortunately, shameless bigots in the audience tried their best to ruin it for everyone.

A significant number of the capacity crowd chanted sectarian, offensive, obscenities as the Rangers icon left the stage to Tina Turner’s Simply the Best.

Audience members also repeatedly interrupted the show, chanting for Gascoigne to sing The Sash, much to the dismay of others in attendance.

Magnum operators KA Leisure admitted the evening highlighted 'certain problem areas' and vowed to work with North Ayrshire Council regarding future events.

Despite the unsavoury scenes, Gazza still managed to leave his adoring fans with plenty of special memories.

He spent time posing for pictures, taking the time to have a chat with starstruck fans.

And, of course, he wasn't short of a classic story or two throughout the evening.

He brought the house down with a tale from his time at Tottenham Hotspur.

One of his early training sessions for the London club saw Gascoigne stop by a local zoo and ask to borrow an ostrich, to which the keeper obliged.

Forgetting about the passenger in his car going to training, Gazza thought he was quick to gain recognition down south with people peeping their horns and waving as he drove past.

But he had forgotten about the giant bird in the back seat of his car.

Arriving at Spurs for training, he presented the ostrich to manager Terry Venables and told him that he had got him a new signing.

And Gazza recalled that the ostrich was one of the fastest at training that day...
