Rangers legend Nacho Novo pays emotional tribute to 'amigo' Fernando Ricksen on first anniversary of death

Nacho Novo has paid an emotional tribute to Rangers legend Fernando Ricksen on the first anniversary of his death.

The Dutchman died on September 18 last year in a hospice just outside Glasgow after a six year battle with motor neurone disease.

The Ibrox club supported him throughout his battle against the degenerative condition, which also claimed the lives of Celtic great Jimmy Johnstone and legendary scientist Steven Hawking among others.

Now former Rangers player Nacho Novo has posted a heartfelt message to his pal on instagram to mark the anniversary of his death.

He posted a picture of Ricksen this morning and wrote: "One year ago today always in my heart brother. I love you to bits amigo."

The pair were team-mates when Rangers won a dramatic 2005 title race on Helicopter Sunday.

Speaking at the time of his death, Novo said his 'best friend' was always a fighter.

"Love you to bits mate rip I will see u soon brother."

Ricksen was a popular player at Ibrox given his full-blooded commitment and determined approach to the game.

He spent six years in Scotland, and his time with  Rangers  was eventful as he won two league titles, two Scottish Cups and three League Cups.

The former Dutch international, who picked up a dozen caps for his country, also won the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award alongside John Hartson in 2005.
