Rangers legend Jorg Albertz and his sensational Clyde comeback story revisited

Today in 1996, Jorg Albertz completed his move to Rangers from Hamburg for £4million and would go on to make a hammer sized mark on Scottish football.

However, it will be his shock switch to Lanarkshire that brought the curtain down on his time in Scotland that will stick in the memories of Clyde fans.

With The Bully Wee scrapping at the foot of the old First Division in 2008, former Ibrox star and Broadwood Stadium gaffer John 'Bomber' Brown picked up the phone to a 37-year-old, retired Albertz.

The German international would be convinced to sign up for the scrap, making his debut in the crucial basement battle with Stirling.

The veteran midfielder would turn out for the club seven times and help the club secure safety via the play-offs before hanging up his boots for a second time.

Club historian Gordon Sydney remembers his brief time in Cumbernauld fondly for the part he played in the survival bid.

He told Lanarkshire Live Sport : "He opened his Clyde account in his first game for the club.

"It was a trademark goal for him, a 30-yard free-kick that ends up in the top corner.

"It got us a point, we played Queen of the South and lose, and the following midweek he scored against St Johnstone; the second goal in a 2-1 win.

"You could argue that in his first three games he got us four points which were crucial at that point.

"You could see his experience shining through in a young Clyde team. He scored a couple of invaluable goals and helped Clyde avoid relegation via the play-offs.

"He'll be remembered fondly for that at Clyde."
