Rangers legend Johnny Hubbard's family back campaign to build memorial in Prestwick

The family of Prestwick sporting legend Johnny Hubbard are backing a bid to honour him in the town.

It comes as a campaign is launched to erect a permanent memorial to the ‘Penalty King’.

South African Hubby was best known as the man who scored 65 times from 68 spot kicks for Rangers.

But Johnny, who ended his career with Ayr United, was also revered as a giant in Prestwick.

He made his mark as a big hitting batsman at the town’s Cricket Club.

He also coached golf and tennis to primary school kids when he was sports officer with the former Prestwick Town Council.

And his legendary five-a-side football tournaments at the old Dam Park Hall in Ayr were the biggest in Britain.

Now four pals are aiming to raise £5000 in an attempt to build a permanent memorial to Mr Sport.

They hope to erect the memorial in a prominent site within Prestwick.

Bill Baillie, Alan Haggo, Gordon McKenzie and Tam Cairns are behind the bid.

Bill told the Ayrshire Post: “Hubby was and always will be a legend in Prestwick and we think it’s only fitting he has this memorial.

“His contribution to children and sport in Ayrshire is immeasurable.

“We all knew him personally and think this is a great way for the community to show its appreciation.”

Hubby's daughter Linda admits the family have been bowled over by the gesture.

She said: “We would like to express our sincere thanks to the organisers of this remarkable tribute to our husband, dad and gramps.

“We have been overwhelmed by the efforts of those involved, especially Bill, Alan, Gordon and Tam.

“We are extremely humbled and it has shown us how much he was appreciated in the community.

“We know that he would have been absolutely delighted to be remembered in this way, which allows him to continue to live on in his home town of Prestwick.”
