Rangers legend Johnny Hubbard could get statue tribute as Ayrshire town looks to recognise community work

A group of locals in Ayrshire are looking to raise £5000 to put towards a statue of Rangers legend Johnny Hubbard.

The South African born forward passed away in 2018 at the age of 87 and spent 10 years playing for Rangers from 1949-1959.

He was the first African to play in European competition and is known as the Penalty King among Rangers supporters for his incredible record of 65 goals from 68 spot kicks for the club.

He also remains the last Rangers player to score a league hat-trick against Celtic, way back in 1955 when he netted a treble - including one from the spot - in a 4-1 win.

Hubbard also played for Ayr United at the end of his career before settling in Ayrshire for the rest of his life where he became a well known figure.

He lived in Prestwick for much of his life, immersing himself in the local community and a gofundme page has been set up in a bid to build a statue in the area.

The statue will pay tribute to his status as a local hero, rather than his exploits for Rangers.

The group have so far raised £3200 and hope to hit the target of £5000 to build the memorial.

On their page, they said: "We are a small group of people who personally knew the man and felt it would be fitting to recognise the contributions made by Johhny by providing a memorial in Prestwick to show the appreciation of the local community for all the hard work done by Johnny for the region."

You can help raise money for the campaign by clicking on the gofundme page, HERE.
