Rangers legend Ian Durrant reveals Neil Simpson stand-off as he readies himself for further knee surgery

Ian Durrant has revealed he still struggles with discomfort in his knee more than 30 years after he was badly injured after a challenge by Aberdeen 's Neil Simpson.

The 1988 horror-tackle has been the source of enmity between Rangers and Dons supporters ever since with the two clubs developing what has been a bitter rivalry.

And Durrant , now 53, has revealed he is struggling with pain and will need further surgery to improve his quality of life.

Speaking to PLZ Soccer , he said:"Arthritis comes to us all at one point but I knew that my knee was going to be heavily arthritic and I'm feeling the pain just now.

"But you just get on with it. I'll get it fixed nearer the summer, but that's just part and parcel of it.

"I knew at one point I was going to have to get a knee reconstruction so it's coming a wee bit earlier than I thought it would have been.

"Have I ever met Neil since? Never.

"I think it would be a stand-off, I think it would be a Clint Eastwood one wouldn't it!

"I know he has suffered at times as well.

"I think the two of us have suffered, some more than others.

"You'll never forget it but there is a level of forgiveness you'll get. In between there was a lot of dark days.

"This persona that you'll fight through it... your life is your life.  You've just got to get on with it.

"Unfortunately people are saying what I could have been and should have been now.

"It took me two-and-a-half years to get back playing but it was the only thing that I knew.

"It gave me the determination and through the great will of the club, sending me out to America, which was unknown at the time, that gave me a chance to get back playing."
