Rangers legend Ian Durrant on the Walter Smith rocket that's become an Internet sensation

Ian Durrant has lifted the lid on the Walter Smith dressing down that's taken on a life of its own.

The Ibrox hero had a key role on the coaching staff under his mentor and would often sit alongside Smith inside the directors box to get a bird's-eye view of proceedings.

But Durrant , who enjoyed a close bond with the wildly-successful Rangers boss during his second spell in charge between 2007 and 2011, was scolded by the boss during a clash with Celtic in October 2009.

The 52-year-old was sent downstairs to get his message across after a breakdown in communication. And the clip has taken on a life of its own after becoming immortalised as a gif used by football fans across the globe.

He told the Athletic : “The phones weren’t working properly and I had tried to use the others in the stadium but they weren’t either.

"So, when that happened and with it being such an important game, he was frustrated he couldn’t get his message to make changes.

"I took the brunt of it by getting a clip round the head.

"The gaffer’s lucky I like him.”
