Rangers legend Ally McCoist pays tribute to Diego Maradona as 'possibly the best ever'

Rangers and Scotland legend Ally McCoist paid tribute to Diego Maradona after he died at the age of 60.

McCoist described how he was just a teen when he watched Maradona at Hampden Park in his international debut for Argentina.

Maradona missed the 1978 World Cup because the then Argentina manager Cesar Luis Menotti felt he was too young to play in the tournament.

A year later, he was a regular in the squad and was part of the Argentina team who faced Scotland at Hampden on June 2, 1979.

And it was on that night he scored his first goal for his country.

Ally posted a picture of the game on Instagram. He wrote: “I was at Hampden as a 16-year-old watching this man score his first international goal as an 18-year-old in a 3-1 Argentina win.

“And, even then, he was quite unbelievable. Diego Armando Maradona - a genius with the ball, very possibly the best ever.”
