Rangers learn new foe as Union Saint Gilloise sign 21-goal striker ahead of Champions League battle

Union Saint-Gilloise have confirmed the signing of Swedish striker Gustaf Nilsson ahead of facing Rangers in the Champions League third qualifying round.

The Belgian club stunned several people last season by coming in as First Division runners-up during their maiden season at that level in over 40 years. Union have been hunting for a replacement for Deniz Undav, who was the top scorer in Belgium last season with 25 goals in 33 league starts before heading back to parent club Brighton. They've found a forward capped twice by Sweden.

He gets his big break after finding himself at German third division outfit Wehen Wiesbaden and has netted 21 times since moving there in January 2021. A statement from the Belgian shock troops reads: "Union Saint-Gilloise has a new striker! Gustaf Nilsson joins our ranks from the German club Wehen Wiesbaden! Swedish international twice, with a goal against Denmark, Gustaf stands out for his size (1m96) and his sense of goal.

"Before arriving in Wiesbaden, where he scored 21 goals in 50 games, our new centre-forward was active in Scandinavia.

"Trained in Falkenberg in Sweden, he then moved on to Brondby then Silkeborg and Velje, before returning home to Hacken.

"At 25, he took a new step by signing a 3-season contract with an option for 1 additional year at the Union."

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men travel to Belgium on Champions League duty next Tuesday before the return at Ibrox on August 9th.
