Rangers learn Champions League third qualifying round fate as journey to group stages begins

Rangers have learned their Champions League third round qualifying fate as they face Union Saint-Gilloise in their first hurdle to reach Europe's top table.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men will take on the Belgian outfit in a two-legged tie with the winner advancing to the play-off round and moving to within just 180 minutes of reaching the lucrative group stages of the competition. Celtic have already booked their place in the draw following their Premiership triumph with the likes of holders Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Liverpool and AC Milan all entering this stage.

But all focus for the Light Blues will be on this first task as last season's Europa League finalists bid to avoid an early exit, like they did last term against Swedish side Malmo. During the run to Seville, the Ibrox men claimed some huge scalps against the likes of Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig and will be hoping to tap into that experience once again. A number of new faces have arrived at the club while some key players have left - but the objective remains the same as the Light Blues faithful dream of the famous anthem under the lights at Ibrox.

John Souttar is in the door following his pre-contract arrival from Hearts with Antonio Colak, Tom Lawrence, Rabbi Matondo and Malik Tillman joining the Ibrox ranks.

Joe Aribo - who played a key role last season - has left for Southampton while Calvin Bassey is on the verge of a big money move to Ajax. Van Bronckhorst has moved quick to replace the versatile defender with Ben Davies lined up from Liverpool.

Rangers will play their third qualifying round ties on the midweek of August 2/3 with the second leg a week later on August 9.

They will travel for the first leg to Belgium with the second leg played at Ibrox.

With the play-off round draw on August 2, Van Bronckhorst and Co will know who they could potentially face with a place in the competition proper and a huge financial windfall that comes with it the big prize on offer.
