Rangers kid Nathan Patterson backed to solve Scotland problem spot as Steve Clarke urged to make squad call

Kris Commons has urged Steve Clarke to make a brave call and name Nathan Patterson in his Scotland squad this week.

The Celtic hero reckons the Rangers defender has proven he is ready to make his international bow, and believes he's the perfect pick for the right back position.

It has been a bit of a problem spot for Scotland in recent years with the likes of Kieran Tierney filling in while Clarke has preferred a 3-5-2 to offer more support.

Stephen O'Donnell has been in possession of the jersey in recent games but Commons reckons it should go to Patterson in the near future.

The 12-time capped former Scotland midfielder reckons that even if he isn't a starter in the World Cup qualifiers coming up, he should be included after being so impressive for Steven Gerrard's side.

Patterson has only made eight senior appearances in his career and got his first goal for Rangers in the win over Antwerp last month.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Commons said: "It's been a running joke for years with Scotland that arguably our two best players happen to be left-backs.

"The right side of defence has been problematic. No one has made the jersey their own.

"Which is why I hope Nathan Patterson is named in Steve Clarke's squad tomorrow. He has earned the chance.

"Let's be honest, we're not exactly blessed with an abundance of options at right-back. Why not bring Patterson in and at least get him used to being in that environment?

"He has been excellent for Rangers. His performance against Slavia Prague in Europe last week spoke of a growing maturity. He's ready to step up."
