Rangers keeper Jon McLaughlin explains Allan McGregor Scottish Cup final gesture

Rangers keeper Jon McLaughlin explains Allan McGregor Scottish Cup final gesture

RANGERS stopper Jon McLaughlin has lifted the lid on Allan McGregor's cameo appearance in last season's Scottish Cup final.

The highly-experienced keeper was subbed on for McLaughlin in the final moments of the club's extra-time win over Hearts in May.

It certainly appeared to be a final farewell from McGregor, with his contract expiring.

However, the veteran goalie has since penned a one-year extension to his deal, meaning he will be aiming to keep the No.1 spot in Giovanni van Bronckhorst's first full season in charge in the year ahead.

On the cup final appearance though, McLaughlin says the decision to bring McGregor on was a spur of the moment call from the manager.

Speaking to Rangers TV, the goalkeeper said: “It was just spur of the moment.

“There were obviously question marks over what was going to happen with Allan.

“We’d had the European Final during the week, which would have hurt him and felt like a negative. It wouldn’t have been great to finish the season like that.

"We were 2-0 up at half-time in extra time and I said to Colin, if we are still in this position with five minutes to go I was more than happy to let Allan get on.

“After the couple of seasons he’d had, he deserved to have that moment and to share in it. It was great to have the luxury to do that and hopefully he was happy to get on and share it.”
