Rangers invited to celebrate 55 league titles in Belfast with Linfield friendly

Linfield have invited Rangers to celebrate winning their 55th league title with a friendly in Belfast.

The Ibrox side often travel across to play at Windsor Park and the two clubs have a close relationship.

Rangers latest championship success takes them one above 'Blues Brothers' Linfield, who are Northern Ireland's most successful club with 54 titles.

Former Gers striker David Healy is currently in charge at Linfield - and the Belfast Telegraph reports an open invitation has been extended to Steven Gerrard and his men to warm up for next season with a friendly match.

Matches between the two sides are typically a sell-out and should fans be allowed in into the stadium, the prospect of an away-day in Northern Ireland who be hugely popular with Rangers fans.

Linfield chairman Roy McGivern has said he wants Gerrard and his men to return this summer after he tweeted his congratulations when the Light Blues wrapped the title up last weekend.

He wrote: “Huge congratulations to everyone at Rangers FC on securing their 55th league title.

"It’s been a long journey back to the top of Scottish football but they have been superb this season and fully deserve all the plaudits that will come their way."

Last time the sides met Mark Warburton was in charge as the Gers ran out 7-0 winners for Jamie Mulgrew’s testimonial in September 2016.

Kenny Miller struck four times on the day while Joe Garner bagged his first goal for the side and Niko Kranjcar and Rob Kiernan also chipped in.

The teams also played in a fundraising friendly for Rangers back in May 2012 after the Ibrox side had gone into administration.

Healy played for the Scottish champions in a 2-0 win, with Alejandro Bedoya and Barry McKay notching the goals that day.

Linfield donated all the proceeds from the capacity crowd to Rangers as they struggled to fight off liquidation.

Rangers’ pre-season plans have not been announced as of yet but they are set to begin their European campaign next season in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

The first leg is due to be played on August 3 or 4 with the draw taking place on July 26.
