Rangers injury update as Steven Gerrard provides ray of light and the latest on James Tavernier's fitness battle

Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield is in the mix for a quick fire return to action against Bayer Leverkusen.

The Ibrox star hasn't played since limping off in the Scottish Cup defeat to Hearts on February 29 with a hamstring injury but is back in the squad to take on the Germans.

But there's less positive news on the injury front with Jermain Defoe and Ryan Jack with both out for the last 16 first leg as Rangers look for a rousing result to keep alive their Euro dreams.

Captain James Tavernier is facing an uphill battle to be fit after missing training on Wednesday with a foot complaint.

The Englishman has been in a boot in recent days with the club's medical team doing all they can to get the skipper ready.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard said: "Arfield is available, has trained the last few days.

"Ryan Jack won't make it. Defoe will be out for a couple of weeks with a calf problem.

"Tavernier didn't train today with a foot problem but will give him until the last minute to make it.

Boss Gerrard is adamant his side can cause an upset if everyone is together when Leverkusen come to visit.

He added: "When the fans are behind us in this team and we find our level we are a real good team.

"We all know as a group we have to find a performance to compete with this level of opposition."
