Rangers in fan warning after Leverkusen shut down as supporters urged not to travel

Rangers have warned fans not to ignore warnings against travelling for their Europa League second leg against Bayer Leverkusen.

It was confirmed on Tuesday that the game will be played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus outbreak that has swept across Europe.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) officially labelled COVID-19 a pandemic this afternoon and Rangers have warned fans against ignoring advice not to travel.

A statement said: "Rangers has now received official confirmation from both UEFA and Bayer Leverkusen that the return leg of our Europa League round of 16 tie will be played behind closed doors in Leverkusen’s BayArena next Thursday, March 19.

"Rangers regrets that supporters will have made travel arrangements but warnings and advice about coronavirus must be followed.

"The German authorities believe this is the correct course of action and Rangers respects their decision not to allow fans into the stadium."

The message comes after Steven Gerrard addressed the supporter shut down in his press conference ahead of the first leg.

Asked about the ban on fans, he said: "If they decide they've already paid for flights and they want to go support the team in any shape or form, I'll go with that."

Gerrard and his team have been preparing for tomorrow's first leg with a training session at Auchenhowie today.

The Liverpool legend could be seen taking a hands-on approach as the Gers look to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

The scheduling and future of this season's Europa League could come into doubt though, with tomorrow's Inter vs Getafe and Sevilla vs Roma games postponed.
