Rangers in driving seat for former Bristol Rovers forward who could net Gas a tidy sum

The chase for former Bristol Rovers forward Jonson Clarke-Harris continues with Rangers reportedly at the head of the hunt for the coveted striker.

Clarke-Harris has already netted the Gas a fee of £1.25m, as he joined Darren Ferguson's side in August 2020, but with hundreds of thousands earned on top of that as per add ons involved in the deal.

Rovers have a sell-on clause of 20 per cent so any big money move in this window would bring in a very handy amount for Joey Barton's side this summer.

Rangers are long-time admirers of the Posh forward and the Ibrox side are said to have scouted him extensively last season as he hit 33 goals in sending Peterborough United into the Championship, though selling Gers forward Alfredo Morelos first would likely be necessary for the SPFL champions to get their man.

The Daily Record reports that Bournemouth, Sheffield United, West Brom and CSKA Moscow are all among the sides who are closely monitoring the 27-year-old and considering upping the ante.

But that the 27-year-old would favour a move north of the border if a transfer elsewhere materialised and the choice was given to the player.

But there could be some way to go. Peterborough owner Darragh MacAntony played down talk of a move for Clarke-Harris on the weekend, as he replied to supporters on social media.

'Don’t see why not bud' replied MacAnthony on Sunday, when asked if the former Oldham, Rotherham and Coventry attacker would remain with the Cambridgeshire outfit after the summer transfer window shuts.

Every EFL side has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic though, and a big bid is likely to test the resolve of any side in the English second tier without Premier League parachute payments.

Posh would expect upwards of £5 million for Clarke-Harris if the club did decide to sell, according to the Peterborough Telegraph.

Whether the transfer dominos fall the way of Rovers in the next five weeks, to see a nice fee head to the Mem, remains to be seen, but bids are expected to yet arrive for Posh stars Clarke-Harris and also Siriki Dembele.
