Rangers icon Walter Smith to receive public memorial service

Rangers have confirmed that a public memorial service for former manager Walter Smith will be held later this month, after the icon passed away last week.

The memorial event will take place at Glasgow Cathedral on Friday, November 19, and will be invite-only, but will be broadcast for free on Rangers TV.

A private family funeral will be held for Lanark-born Walter Smith on Wednesday, November 3, prior to the public memorial.

Rangers have asked that the family's privacy is respected by all supporters, wider public and media.

It is intended that the cortege will pass Ibrox at 3.15pm, entering from Helen Street, driving in the direction of Paisley Road West, before rejoining the motorway.

In a statement issued today, Rangers said: "The club would like to put on record its thanks to our supporters, supporters of other clubs and the wider community for their kind words and support at this difficult time."
