Rangers icon Walter Smith recovering in hospital after operation

Rangers have announced that former manager Walter Smith is recovering in hospital following an operation.

The iconic Ibrox gaffer, from Lanark, underwent surgery on Monday and Rangers posted a statement on their official Twitter account this evening, amid social media rumours surrounding his health.

A statement from Rangers read: "Rangers Football Club can confirm Walter Smith had an operation on Monday and he is currently recovering in hosiptal.

"His family have requested privacy at this time."

Former Scotland boss Smith led a star-studded Gers side, including the likes of Ally McCoist, Paul Gascoigne and Brian Laudrup, to their famous nine-in-a-row triumph in 1997 and is regarded as one of the greatest managers our country has ever produced.

During his managerial career he has been assistant to Jim McLean at Dundee United, Graeme Souness at Rangers and Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

Following Rangers' 55th league title win last Sunday, Souness had fans believing he was hinting at health issues when he told Sky Sports: "My old pal Walter Smith, I see him occasionally, and I’ve asked you Walter to celebrate tonight.

"He knows what I mean. I hope he’s celebrating something else right now as I’m speaking.”
