Rangers' Ianis Hagi transfer trump card as Lazio 'track' Ibrox loanee

Lazio are considering a move for Ianis Hagi , according to a report in Italy.

The playmaker has proven a hit on-loan at Rangers since arriving from Genk in January, particularly with his Europa League displays.

It's expected Hagi will leave the Belgian side permanently at the end of the season, with the Ibrox club retaining an "exclusive" option to buy.

The clause in the 21-year-old's loan arrangement was revealed when Rangers announced his arrival on transfer deadline day.

He'll be available for around £4million in the summer if the club wish to buy him.

But according to Corriere dello Sport, that hasn't stopped the Serie A title chasers contacting the player's entourage.

Last week, however, Steven Gerrard was relaxed and appeared content the necessary pieces were in place to bring Hagi to the club permanently.

He said: “We don’t have to push the ball to get it rolling on Hagi just yet. We’ve got time.

“He’s had a strong impact and we’re delighted with him on and off the pitch.

“He’s professional, a student of the game and has quickly picked up how we want to play.

“People talk about the assists and goals but positionally he’s clever.

“His work-rate, his attitude – he has ticked every box.

“It’s a fantastic position to be in, knowing we have first option on him. But I don’t have to make a decision now.

“Does he have to maintain this level of performance?

“All the players do if they want to stay.”

Hagi has settled quickly at Ibrox, and the move has received a seal of approval from the player's father - Romanian icon Gheorghe.

Should Lazio or any other club firm up their alleged interest with a big-money offer, it's likely they'd need the player to rail heavily against a full-time switch to Glasgow, at which point Rangers would be forced to re-consider whether they want to sign him.

However, there's been no indication from Hagi that he's unhappy in his new surroundings.
