Rangers hit out at Arsenal clash getting just 2000 capacity as 'disappointed' club point to Euro 2020 precedent

Rangers have hit out at a decision to permit just 2000 fans to attend Saturday's friendly against Arsenal.

The Ibrox club admit they are "disappointed" at the attendance limit at their 50,000 capacity stadium and with the length of time taken to reach the decision.

Rangers have been locked in talks with the Scottish Government but have not been granted permission to host an increased number of supporters.

2000 is set to become the default limit for outdoor events when Scotland moves to Level 0 Covid-19 restrictions on July 19.

Rangers have pointed to the 12,000 fans permitted at Hampden for Euro 2020 in June as the Premiership champions expressed their frustration with Holyrood.

A club statement said: "Following lengthy discussions with the Scottish Government and local authorities, Rangers have been granted permission to host 2000 supporters at Saturday’s friendly match with Arsenal.

"Season ticket holders who have access to all games at Ibrox will be given priority with the balance being balloted among season ticket holders who are MyGers members and have enrolled in the home friendly scheme .

"Those who are successful in the ballot will receive an email outlining arrangements for Saturday’s match.

"Rangers are disappointed at the small number of supporters being granted access given the precedent which was set at the Euro 2020 matches at Hampden Park as well as at other sporting events in Scotland, and the time it has taken to have the number of supporters confirmed by the Scottish Government."

Steven Gerrard's side host the Premier League side this weekend as their pre-season preparations continue.

Fans have returned to stadia in reduced numbers across the country over the past week in a continued easing of Covid-19 restrictions.

Clubs can apply for increased capacity limits and Celtic have applied to host 20,000 supporters for their upcoming Champions League clash with Midtjylland.

Aberdeen have also requested 8,500 spectators at Pittodrie for their Europa Conference League meeting with BK Hacken.
