Rangers hero's Premiership return ruled out as Motherwell snub him from management shortlist

Kevin Thomson will not become the new manager of Motherwell after the Rangers favourite was left off their final shortlist to replace Graham Alexander.

The former Scotland international departed Fir Park last month after a disastrous Europa Conference League qualification exit to Irish side Sligo Rovers, coming off the back of a poor run of form in 2022. Thomson is currently seeking a new gig after winning League Two in his first senior season at the helm of Kelty Hearts, leaving to pursue full-time opportunities.

He was previously a youth coach at Rangers during Steven Gerrard's tenure in charge of the senior ranks but the Scottish Daily Express report that his name isn't featuring on Motherwell's final shortlist of boss candidates. Celtic hero Paul Lambert has also stated he would be interested in discussing the vacancy in ML1 but he too won't be one his former club take to the final stages of recruitment.

Thomson was on Rangers TV duty on Tuesday night as the Light Blues achieved a memorable 3-0 Champions League third round qualifier second leg win against Union-Saint Gilloise to claim a 3-2 aggregate victory.

It sets up a play-off match with Dutch heavyweights PSV for a place in the elite group stages this season.

Steven Hammell and Simo Valakari are two of the names on Motherwell's shortlist ahead of the former Ibrox midfielder, alongside two unnamed candidates.
