Rangers hero Kris Boyd in disbelief as he watches Celtic soar to new heights

Rangers hero Kris Boyd has spoken out in disbelief at the unsettling reality that Celtic have now overtaken his old club in terms of major honours.

Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football has been remarkable over the past decade, with a 5-0 win at Tannadice last Saturday securing the Premiership title and marking their 13th league win in 14 seasons.

This victory also brought Celtic level with Rangers on 55 top-flight titles, putting them two trophies ahead of their rivals overall.

In addition to their league triumph, Celtic are on the verge of extending their record for Trebles, with the opportunity to secure a world-record ninth domestic clean sweep when they face Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park next month.

Boyd, who enjoyed a stellar career in Light Blue, admitted that seeing Celtic leapfrog Rangers in the trophy count was something he never thought he’d witness.

Speaking at the Kris Boyd Charity Golf Day on Monday, Boyd told Sky Sports: "First of all, congratulations to Celtic. I think once again, they've been the outstanding team in Scotland. That consistency that Brendan Rodgers seems to find from his team is unmatched."

Boyd didn’t hold back when expressing his concerns over Rangers’ current situation, admitting that it’s hard for supporters to watch their bitter rivals thrive while the Ibrox club continue to struggle.

"From a Rangers point of view, there's obviously going to be takeover happening anytime soon. But the harsh reality is, Rangers are falling further and further behind Celtic," he conceded.

"When you go back a few years ago in terms of that trophy count, it was virtually impossible to think - if you go back to my time at the football club - that Celtic were going to get anywhere near it."

While many will point to Rangers' period in the lower leagues after their financial troubles, Boyd noted that Celtic’s dominance has only grown since Rangers' return to the top flight.

He said: "People will say since Rangers went down the league, but Celtic have actually won more trophies since Rangers have come back to the top-flight than they did when they were away."

With Rangers facing the harsh reality of their rivals' continued success, Boyd is calling for another major overhaul this summer to prevent the gap from growing even further.

He cited the consistency of Celtic's performance and the ever-present challenges at Rangers as key issues.

"There’s an overhaul needed again in the summer, but that can't continue to happen every single season," he continued.

"You look at Barry Ferguson on Saturday in his interview, you kind of got the feeling that it’s the exact same as the last few managers. You might get a reaction for a couple of games, but the reality is that there are too many players that will slip back into their own routines," he remarked.

"You look at the first goal Rangers conceded at the weekend, they get a ball into the box and they fail to deal with it and Mark O'Hara scores from there. It’s the same old problems that pop up and cause them issues.

"Once again, there are far too many players that have seen off too many coaches and managers at Rangers and something is going to have to change."
