Rangers hero Davie Wilson is battling dementia

Rangers legend and former Hamilton Accies coach Davie Wilson is battling dementia, his family have revealed.

The 82-year-old is still a regular at Ibrox and formerly worked in corporate hospitality on matchdays.

Wilson was a coach at Accies in 1987 when they famously knocked Rangers out of the Scottish Cup.

A statement issued by Rangers said: "The Wilson Family would like to announce that due to ongoing Alzheimer’s and dementia issues, Rangers legend, Davie Wilson, has now retired from attending Ibrox on match days to watch his beloved Rangers."

Left-winger Wilson won 11 major honours at Rangers from 1956 to 1967, and won 22 caps for Scotland, scoring 10 goals for his country, including in a win over England in 1962.

.Wilson helped Rangers reach the 1960 European Cup semi-final and 1961 Cup Winners' Cup, which they lost to Fiorentina.

After leaving Rangers, then-28 year-old Wilson played for Dundee United and Dumbarton, managed the Sons and Queen of the South, and coached at Hamilton.
