Rangers hero Barry Ferguson brings old cliche to life as Kelty Hearts boss picks up bizarre booking

They say the manager kicks every ball while watching his team from the sidelines.

It's just usually not meant literally.

But Kelty Hearts boss Barry Ferguson brought the old cliche to life on Tuesday night.

His team contested a tightly fought Betfred Cup tie with Peterhead that eventually went to penalties.

The two sides couldn't be separated over 90 minutes and the group stage tie finished goalless.

But before the the final whistle went Rangers hero Ferguson picked up the kind of booking you just don't see every day.

Clearly, something was frustrating the former Ibrox skipper as Peterhead's official Twitter reported he he was carded for "kicking the ball away".

It got worse for the Record Sport columnist soon after as his side were then defeated 5-3 on penalties.

Worse still, radio sparring partner Si Ferry was involved for Peterhead and that's sure to inspire a few choice words the next time the pair go on-air together.

Elsewhere in the Cup, Dundee United and St Johnstone also played out a stalemate before Micky Mellon's side picked up a bonus point in the shoot-out.

Hearts defeated East Fife 3-2 while Livingston hammered Stenhousemuir.

Up north, Ross County avoided an upset by beating Elgin City 4-1.
