Rangers hero Ally McCoist shrugs off 'SFA in Celtic jersey' question by Chris Sutton during TV debate

Ally McCoist has shrugged off the notion that the SFA compliance officer favours Celtic in the disciplinary process.

The Rangers legend has backed Steven Gerrard's call for more consistency from the governing body after Kemar Roofe was handed a retrospective ban for a challenge on St Johnstone's Murray Davidson.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has also been critical of the SFA after Albian Ajeti was cited with a notice of complaint for simulation, although he was later cleared of any wrongdoing.

McCoist debated both flashpoints with Chris Sutton on BT Sport's Scottish Football Extra as the Ibrox hero reiterated Gerrard's point that other incidents go unpunished.

He brought up the likes of Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard which prompted Sutton to ask the pundit if he thinks the compliance officer is 'sitting wearing a Celtic jersey'.

McCoist dismissed that theory but reckons the lack of consistency is 'embarrassing' and Rangers have just had some bad luck recently with Roofe and Alfredo Morelos both currently suspended.

Sutton said: "This is a bigger argument, it has to be that if you're going to ban Ajeti for two games for diving, it has to be across the whole of the league. Every incident has to be looked at and I think that's what Neil Lennon was getting at this week.

"The fact of the matter is Celtic and Rangers are being singled out, it seems."

McCoist responded: "Well, not so much. I agree entirely with what you're saying, but I find it difficult..."

Sutton replied: "I know you find it difficult."

McCoist said: "I'm about to tell you, Morelos' stamp quite rightly was punished, yet Leigh Griffiths' stamp on Gogic at Hamilton isn't.

"Also, Kemar Roofe has had a suspension, when he probably had one of the worst tackles ON him against St Johnstone at Ibrox.

"Morelos got stitches for a tackle against Dundee United, the lad McGinn at St Mirren got away with one at Dundee United, and don't have me starting on Odsonne Edouard's tackle against Dundee United at Celtic Park.

"That might be the worst of the lot! And it's not cited.

"So I don't see your point, Chris."

Sutton hit back: "What are you suggesting here, that the compliance officer is sitting there in a Celtic jersey? What are you suggesting?"

McCoist replied: "I'm suggesting the same that Steven Gerrard is suggesting: that the lack of consistency is absolutely embarrassing."

Sutton added: "Yes, there is a lack of consistency because it seems to be trial by social media, trial by television. And it's not the same across the board.

"Celtic and Rangers players, because they're playing more on television, seem to be getting penalised. That's true, isn't it?"

McCoist said: "The lack of consistency is embarrassing, it's shocking. The fact Rangers seem to be getting the brunt of it is clearly bad luck."

Sutton responded: "How can you sit there with a straight face and say that Rangers have been getting the brunt of it? Over the years, come on!"
