Rangers hero Ally McCoist backs reconstruction to save Hearts but outlines 'disaster' scenario

Ally McCoist is backing league reconstruction as it would "balance out the unfairness" of a Hearts relegation.

The Rangers legend says he is totally against the idea of clubs being put down a division without the whole campaign being played out.

Ann Budge this week submitted league reconstruction proposals, outlining her vision for a 14-14-14 structure with added flexibility for clubs who can't afford to start the new campaign behind closed doors.

The system would remain in place for two seasons, and would see the Jambos retain their top flight status with Inverness Caley Thistle also promoted.

And McCoist, speaking to talkSPORT, said that he would be in favour of reconstruction in some shape or form.

He said: "It [reconstruction] would balance out the unfairness of Hearts being relegated.

"I don't agree with the concept of the relegation, I think it's so unfair on teams like Hearts, Partick Thislte and Stranraer."

However, he reckons clubs being forced to play behind closed doors could spell disaster.

He added: "It would be an absolute disaster for a team like Hearts.

"Down at the bottom of the pyramid, in England and Scotland, there will be, I'm not talking one or two, there will be a good number of clubs who will not be able to survive while playing games behind closed doors.

"I genuinely think that's going to be the case because a lot of the clubs down at the bottom of the pyramid rely heavily on their gates to survive.

"If they were asked to play games behind closed doors, I think it will be virtually impossible for them to survive."
