Rangers handed Europa League injury boost as Royal Antwerp top scorer is ruled out

Royal Antwerp will face Rangers on Thursday night without top scorer Dieumerci Mbokani.

The Belgians must overturn a 4-3 deficit from the first leg and most likely prevent Steven Gerrard’s side from scoring if they are to have a chance of reaching the last 16.

And their chances have been diminished after Mbokani was ruled out with a calf injury.

The 35-year-old striker made his return to action in the goalless draw against STVV at the weekend, but has since suffered a reaction and won’t be in the squad for this week’s Europa League clash at Ibrox.

Cameroon international Didier Lamkel Ze will be back though and is likely to start in attack for Franky Vercauteren.

Ze caused controversy earlier this season by turning up to training in an Anderlecht strip after Antwerp had refused to sell him to their Belgian rivals.

Alireze Biernvand has recovered from the knock that forced him off during last week’s encounter, although central defender Abdoulaye Seck is suspended after being sent off for two yellow cards.

The defender diverted Ryan Kent’s late strike away from goal with his hand and received his marching orders before Borna Barisic converted from 12 yards to give Rangers a lead to take back to Glasgow.
