Rangers guard of honour for Celtic? Steven Gerrard refuses to rule out tribute

Steven Gerrard admits he has yet to decide whether Rangers will give Celtic a champions guard of honour on Sunday.

The tradition, which sees opposition players and coaching staff form a corridor of two lines for the newly-crowned champions to enter the park, has long been established in across world football.

Celtic finally wrapped up the title with a 3-0 victory at Aberdeen on Saturday and head to Ibrox on Sunday for the penultimate game of the Premiership season.

But it has yet to be confirmed whether Rangers will give their arch rivals the show of respect in front of their own support.

Will Rangers give Celtic a guard of honour? About the tradition and the times it has been blanked

Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton stoked the debate on Saturday when he tweeted: "Hopefully Rangers do the right thing and Celtic get a guard of honour at Ibrox next week."

And in a Record Sport Online poll, 60 per cent of voters said Gerrard's troops should give their rivals the tribute.

But Gerrard is cool on plans for a guard of honour - although he refused to rule it out.

Speaking after Sunday's 1-0 win over Hibs the Rangers boss said: “Have I got plans? I don’t know, I haven’t spoken to them (the club) about it.”

Light Blues supporters reacted angrily to Sutton's tweet, with many replying that they would walk out of the stadium if their heroes applauded Celtic onto the park.

The guard of honour is a regular occurrence in the modern era but has happened as far back as 1955 when Manchester United gave one to Chelsea.
