Rangers have granted Steven Gerrard permission to speak to Aston Villa, according to a report.
The Premier League club are pushing to make the Ibrox boss their new manager after parting ways with Dean Smith at the weekend.
Gerrard emerged as Villa 's top target at the beginning of the week and it's said he is now on the verge of taking the job.
The Telegraph report Rangers have given the 41-year-old the all-clear to discuss terms with Villa.
Gerrard worked with the club's CEO Christian Purslow - a former Liverpool managing director - during his playing career at Anfield.
Backroom staff Gary McAllister, Michael Beale, Tom Culshaw and Jordan Milsom could join the former England captain in returning south of the border.
Rangers are in line to receive around £3million in compensation should the deal be finalised.
Gerrard could then take charge of his first fixture against Brighton a week on Saturday, with Villa sitting 16th in the Premier League table.
