Rangers given 'top side' verdict but Motherwell captain confidently provides 'good one for the camera' hope

Motherwell captain Stephen O'Donnell hopes the Steelmen can give a good account of themselves on Sunday when the TV cameras are in place for their hosting of Rangers.

The Steelmen ended a run of three straight Premiership defeats against St Mirren on Wednesday with a 2-2 draw at Fir Park.

Rangers make the trip to North Lanarkshire this Sunday for a midday clash, with the fixture to be broadcast on Sky Sports.

Graham Alexander's side drew with Rangers 1-1 at Ibrox last month when the Govan club unfurled last season's title-winning flag, and O'Donnell believes Motherwell can build on that.

"Rangers are a top side and we performed well against them at Ibrox," said O'Donnell. "Hopefully we can do so again in front of the cameras.

"We want it to be a right good game. I would love a result but I hope it's a good one for the cameras. It's always important when a game is on the TV that you put on a show.

"You want to put on a performance that attracts people to Scottish football. You want to help sell a brand and hopefully we can be a good part of that."

O'Donnell knows Motherwell's squad is still new, but says last month's trip to Rangers has been of benefit.

"For a lot of the boys, that game at Ibrox was one they probably hadn't played before," explained O'Donnell. "In their stadium, it's a big atmosphere.

"It was also flag day there so that was a good experience. We handled it well so there should be no reason why we can't go and do that again at our place.

"We have an intensity about how we try to play and when we play like that, we are a good side."

Motherwell finished the first rotation of matches on Wednesday and sit in the top six.

The Scotland right-back says a poor League Cup campaign - which ended at the last 16 with defeat to Dundee and included a loss to Airdrie in the group stages - was a good wake-up call.

"It's been one of the best starts we've had in a long time," added O'Donnell. "I think there is plenty of room for improvement, but there's been plenty of positives.

"There's been an influx of new players so to get results as quickly as we have speaks volumes of the collective. Hopefully, it suggests we can improve more.

"Time will tell how it all unfolds. There's lots of new faces. The League Cup was good to iron out some problems and we've built from there.

"We do need to improve, as there's been a few games where we haven't performed to a level we can. But we've had a great start overall.

"Whenever you finish the first quarter of games, the first one after that is always one you want to get off to a good start in."
