Rangers given Portuguese piano serenade ahead of Benfica clash as British ambassador takes on terrace anthem

Rangers will be without their loyal travelling support in Thursday's mouthwatering European away day at Benfica.

But they can count on one fan inside the Portuguese capital as the Govan side aim to make it three wins from three in the Europa League group stage - the British Ambassador to Portugal, Chris Sainty.

The diplomat has been enamoured with Steven Gerrard 's team and their performances this season - the latest being Sunday's hard-fought 1-0 win at Kilmarnock.

That victory took them nine points clear of rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership with the Hoops on Scottish Cup duty.

And Sainty saluted the Light Blues ahead of their arrival in Lisbon with a piano rendition of classic Ibrox anthem "Every Other Saturday".

It's not the first time he has given props to the title hopefuls, however.

Sainty, a Liverpool fan and self-professed Gerrard admirer, was full of congratulations after Rangers defeated another Portuguese side last season.

After Ryan Kent's winner sealed a 4-2 aggregate win in Braga during their Europa League run last season, Sainty tweeted: "Congratulations @RangersFC. Commiserations @SCBragaOficial. A hard won qualification for the last 16 of the @EuropaLeague."

The politician, after being swamped by delighted supporters, added: "Pleasure to make your acquaintance ladies and gents. I will henceforth take a close interest in the club’s fortunes. Can’t claim to be a lifelong fan but I am a huge admirer of your manager."
