Rangers get tough over Alfredo Morelos and James Tavernier as Steven Gerrard makes transfer claim

Steven Gerrard insists Rangers DON’T have to sell star men James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos to fund their summer spending.

As the Ibrox boss waited on seventh new signing Joe Aribo arriving at their Portugal training camp, he was adamant his two biggest assets are going nowhere.

Gerrard admits he’s bracing himself for bids from clubs keen on skipper Tavernier and top scorer Morelos.

But he says they’ll only leave Rangers if the price is right and if he has replacements lined up.

Gerrard revealed there hasn’t been any concrete offers for either player and with Aribo set to be announced as their latest acquisition, he claims he’s under no pressure to sell.

He said: “There’s been a lot of speculation about Tav and Alfredo and I’m not surprised.

“They both had very good seasons but there hasn’t been a single bid for either or for any of my players up until now.

“Do I have to sell to bring in? I don’t think so. I’d be quite happy to go with what we’ve got if we can get another centre-back in.

“Am I confident of keeping Tav and Alfredo? It’s not a question I need to answer now because there are no offers.

“Am I expecting a bid? Possibly. I’ll make a decision if and when a bid lands. Every player has a price but if bids are nowhere near acceptable the answer’s a straight ‘no’.”
