Rangers get Champions League co-efficient boost as Brondby edge closer to Danish title

Rangers have edged closer to being seeded for the Champions League third round qualifier with Brondby closing in on the Danish title.

The Ibrox side are set to enter the tournament at the third round and now look certain to be among the seeds for the draw.

It’s the first time they’ve been in the Champions League in more than a decade but their performances in the Europa League in recent years has helped them get a good standing.

And Brondby’s win means that it should be a slightly easier first game for Rangers in the Champions League.

Rangers needed anyone but Copenhagen to win the Danish top flight, and Brondby’s 2-1 win over Aarhus on Thursday night put them clear of Midtjylland and their capital rivals.

It means with one round of games left, Copenhagen are three points and nine goals behind Brondby.

Copenhagen do still have a chance to win the league but it’s unlikely that they’d manage to do so with the deficit between the sides.

Steven Gerrard's men have two rounds of qualifiers to get to the group stage if they are to compete at the level for the first time since 2010/11.
