Rangers' former Bristol City defender attracting Premier League attention as Aston Villa and Brighton consider bid

A former Bristol City loanee could be on his way to the Premier League with Aston Villa interested in his signature.

The Midlands club are reportedly keen to bring in Rangers right-back and captain James Tavernier.

The 27-year-old scored a whopping 17 goals from the back last season as Steven Gerrard's side finished second in the Scottish Premiership.

The Daily Mail reports Villa are among a number of clubs - including Brighton and West Brom - weighing up a bid for Tavernier having released defenders Alan Hutton, Tommy Elphick, Richie De Laet and Micah Richards.

The Bradford-born defender spent the second half of the 2014/15 season on loan at Ashton Gate from Wigan Athletic.

He chipped in with a handy three goals and an assist in 13 appearances as the Robins won the double of the League One title and the Football League Trophy.

The former Newcastle defender joined Rangers at the end of that season and has become a stalwart at Ibrox, making close to 200 appearances, scoring 43 goals and providing 59 assists - prolific form for a defender.
