Rangers flop Joey Barton slapped down by Ali Crawford as he recalls Ibrox nutmeg

Former Hamilton Accies ace Ali Crawford has slapped down Joey Barton as he recalled the time the Rangers flop took a pop at the standard of Scottish football.

Barton, who only played eight games for Rangers before quitting the club in November 2016, claimed the level in Scotland was "pathetic" after heading back to England.

But Crawford showed him a thing or two with a cheeky nutmeg and a stunning opening goal in a 1-1 draw at Ibrox that season.

Speaking on The Lanarkshire Football Show podcast, Crawford, who spent 11 years at Accies before joining Doncaster Rovers in 2018, said: "Playing in the Scottish League as long as I did, to hear somebody who has had a decent career down in England come up and really belittle the Scottish league, and say that it would be a walk in the park, is not nice to hear.

"It's not nice to hear when you have been in that league and you've played so long in it.

"On the day [I played against him] it wasn't so easy for him, shall we say.

"A lot got made of the nutmeg rather than the goal I scored against him.

"But it was another good day in my career and another good away day for the Hamilton fans."

That should make things interesting for the 28-year-old winger, now at English League One side Bolton Wanderers, should he return from injury in time to face Fleetwood Town - managed by Barton - on March 28.

As well as his effort against Rangers, Crawford also netted the only goal in Accies' famous 1-0 win at Parkhead, which gave the Lanarkshire side their first win at Celtic Park in 76 years, back in 2014.

He added: "It's a good achievement.

"I would've liked to have scored at home against them as well, but I'll take the two goals away from home."

Listen to the podcast below as injury-prone Crawford talks about his "chocolate knees", plastic pitches, rumours he was going to join Rangers and a look ahead to Saturday's Lanarkshire Derby between Hamilton and Motherwell.
