NEW YORK — In a series of events familiar to Knicks fans, the Rangers have turned what would have been a forgettable news cycle into a complete self-immolation.
After the Capitals’ Tom Wilson was slapped on the wrist for cheap shots on two Rangers, the team put out a statement calling for NHL Head of Player Safety George Parros to be fired.
On Thursday, the league fined the Rangers $250,000 for accusing Parros of a “dereliction of duty.”
“Public comments of the nature issued by the Rangers that were personal in nature and demeaning of a league executive will not be tolerated,” league Commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement.
“It is terribly unfair to question George Parros’ (professionalism) and dedication to his role and the Department of Player Safety.”
The fine comes the day after owner James Dolan blew up the franchise by cleaning out the front office, and the day after the Rangers got in six fights of the first five minutes of a 4-2 loss to the Capitals.
