Rangers fend off coefficient rivals as Champions League boost looms but Celtic could still have big say

Rangers' win over Standard Liege was crucial in helping them reach the Europa League last - but it also had huge implications with Scotland's coefficient.

The Glasgow clubs are chasing that elusive 11th spot that guarantees them a direct route into the Champions League next season.

Ukraine are hot on their tails, however, as Shakhtar Donetsk and Zorya picked up big wins over Real Madrid and Leciester City.

But Steven Gerrard's men were able to keep them at bay for the time being with a comeback victory over the Belgians.

As it stands, Ukraine are just 0.025 coefficent points behind Scotland.

Rangers are through to the knockout round which means they have at least two more games to increase Scotland's chances, but Celtic could still give them a helping hand in their last group stage game against Lille despite being eliminated.

Shakhtar are still in contention to reach the Champions League last 32, but could also finish bottom of their group. Dynamo Kiev could drop down into the Europa League if results go their way too, while Zorya will not advance to the next stage.

Coefficent table

11. Scotland - 31.125

12, Ukraine - 31.100

13. Turkey - 30.100
